Dental Checkups & Cleanings

We recommend bringing your child in for a routine checkup and cleaning every six months. These visits not only include a thorough examination of their teeth, gums, tongue, throat, and bite, but also a professional cleaning to remove harmful oral bacteria. We’ll look for indications of decay, infection, and damage, as well as provide a carefully crafted treatment plan (if required) and at-home oral hygiene tips.

Fluoride Treatment

When attempting to prevent dental caries from forming, we can apply a protective layer of fluoride during a regular checkup. Quick to administer and completely painless, the fluoride penetrates the enamel to remineralize weakened areas as well as protect against future decay. If your child already has a cavity but is not yet ready for a tooth-colored filling, we can apply silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to arrest the decay and protect against additional bacteria and plaque.

Dental Sealants

As children continue to refine their brushing habits, applying an additional layer of protection can’t hurt, especially to the hardest areas for little hands to reach when cleaning their smile. Dental sealants are applied to the biting surface of molars to prevent debris from collecting in their pits and grooves, helping protect from cavities for years to come.

Space Maintainers

It’s important for baby teeth to fall out on their own; however, should an accident or significant decay occur that causes one or more primary teeth to fall out or be extracted, a space maintainer may be required. This small appliance is placed in the area previously occupied by the tooth and works to prevent nearby healthy teeth from shifting out of alignment. It also ensures the primary tooth will come in straight when it’s time for it to erupt.

Athletic Mouthguards/ Sportsguards

Playing sports can be a child’s favorite pastime, but it can also be a potentially dangerous and costly activity if appropriate mouth protection is neglected. At our SmileTown offices, we are pleased to provide young patients with customized athletic mouthguards to ensure their teeth and gums avoid accidental injury during a big game. Crafted for better comfort and proper fit, this barrier of protection can lower the risk of knocked-out teeth as well as chips and cracks – all of which can require costly treatment to fix.
