Their newfound mobility can make it increasingly difficult for parents to establish good brushing habits at home – an essential component of helping prevent cavities. It is also a time when teething becomes an unwelcome guest. Fortunately, our SmileTown dentists can provide helpful solutions designed to navigate tooth eruption and keep these new arrivals clean for better long-term oral development. Toddler Teeth Development

Before your child is born, they have 20 teeth living below the gumline. The first tooth will likely erupt between six and twelve months of age. It’s likely that the two bottom teeth located at the front of the mouth will push through first; however, this is not always the case, as each child is different. By the time your child reaches three years old, most of their baby teeth will have erupted.

What is Teething?

Teething occurs when baby teeth erupt, often causing discomfort. You may find your toddler reaching for almost anything to try and numb or stop the pain. Drooling, fussiness, and gnawing on fingers are key indicators that one or more teeth are trying to push through the gumline. Our dentists can recommend useful products and techniques to help minimize your child’s discomfort during this time. It’s important to remember that this stage is normal, and you can count on our team to be available should you need additional support.

How to Clean Your Toddler’s Teeth and Gums

When cleaning your toddler’s teeth and gums, you’ll start by using a smear of toothpaste (the size of a grain of rice) to brush erupted teeth. If they are older and can spit, you can use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. This is necessary to perform at least twice each day but can also be completed after meals. Once you notice they have two teeth that are touching, you will need to use child-friendly flossers to remove any bacteria that might try to cause cavities or gum disease.
